Elgin Opera's goals are to create engaging community programs that entice new audiences to this musical genre while providing high quality performances in venues convenient to residents in outlying Chicago areas. This is accomplished through affordable public performances, the Training Ensemble, and custom-designed programs for organizations, schools and senior residential facilities.

In 2009, our Artist-in-Residence status at Elgin Academy made it possible to inaugurate an extensive summer program of master classes, performances, and community outreach. All finalists of our annual Vocal Competition were invited to be featured, together with members of the Elgin Opera Training ensemble, student and professional singers from throughout Chicagoland, and guest artists from Opera Moda and Chamber Opera Chicago.
The two-month festival culminated in an evening of staged opera scenes, including a full production of Puccini's Suor Angelica, featuring soprano Marcy Stonikas, winner of Division IV and the "Most Promising Artist" award in our 2009 Vocal Competition, in the title role.
The summer of 2010 saw an expanded series of performances and educational opportunities as this exciting program continued to grow. We want to thank our main sponsor for this event, the Barbara & Barre Seid Foundation. |
